I attended the folktale workshop for elementary teachers. I learned some new aspects of Latin American culture. I had never heard the Mayan creation story before. It was interesting to see how it resembled other creation stories. We also read some short folk stories. Unfortunately, it would be very difficult to incorporate either of these into the elementary classroom.
The one part of the workshop that could be used in the elementary classroom is the poetry book, A Movie on My Pillow, by Jorge Argueta. The book had many interesting poems with English and Spanish translations for each and corresponding illustrations. This book could be incorporated into a poetry unit, allowing the students to copy his style on a particular poem and write their own. An alternative for younger students is to have them interpret the poems through their own illustrations.
