The website posted above gives basic background information on a book that was written by four Cubans concerning the freedom of Cuban citizens. The individuals were arrested and put in jail. I think it would be an awesome project to use
this website to help students learn about the freedom struggle many countries are still under today. I would like to use this site, including the introduction of the book which is given, and have students compile some examples of the lack of freedom within Cuba, including issues with Fidel
Castro. Then, the students will choose one specific event, and write a creative writing piece from the perspective of a Cuban Citizen. The class can analyze the introduction to The Homeland Belongs to Us All, and discuss the influence of
perspective and point of view. Also, a study of sympathy and empathy can be included, so that the students learn how to write from another's perspective and realize the power the author has to influence readers by using first-person point of view. This lesson plan would also help develop students' English skills
including Grammar, Sentence Structure, Ordering Events, Using Transition Words, and expanding their knowledge of diversity on world events and history.
http://www.centramerica.com/
Using the Above site, students can have access to many central America countries such as Belize, Honduras, Costa Rica, and many more. I believe it would be a great lesson to put the students into groups and have them choose a country, research its different aspect of life, traditions, culture, government, and
then create a newspaper from that country including an editorial section, main news section, an entertainment section, sport section, and government news
sections. Also included would be a weather forecast outlook, and an
advertisement section which would force students to be creative and convert their knowledge of the country to a couple advertisements. You could also include a comic section, where students can create political cartoons and such.
Each student in the group could get a section of the paper and focus on that.Eventually the students will need to come together and put their ideas into one newspaper which all fits together and is connected through themes, paper, or any
other creative ideas. The students could also be asked to look over the paper they get delivered at home to get a feel of what is expected and what information should be included. This will encourage the students to read, learn how to navigate a newspaper, and get involved in current events while adding a
creative aspect and educational aspect by involving countries unfamiliar to the students.
http://www.andes.org/poems.html
A Lesson concerning poetry could be created using the above website. Students could be put into groups and assigned a poem to analyze and explicate. In doing this, the class could study the literature of Latin American Countries. Students could do short bibliographies of the poems authors in order to gain more understanding of the author’s history. After these explications are presented to the class, students to try and tackle the task of creating a poem themselves that could be representative of the Latin American Culture. Such questions could be posed as: Who is Pachakuteq, from Octavio Díaz Mendoza’s poem, a study of oppression by students could be helpful in understanding Antenor Peralta’s poem, and what is the importance of animals to the Latin American culture that is seen in Kamayoq’s poem? After completing the poems, students and post them around the room and have an exhibit. The teacher could also require some type of artistic representation of the poem as well, which would bring in an art aspect above and beyond writing poetry. This lesson would increase students’ ability to analyze poetry, learn about Latin American Culture, and allow them to practice their own writing skills.
http://www.hrw.org/advocacy/prisons/americas.htm
The following site could easily be incorporated into an English Class by doing a study of human rights through the prison systems within Latin American countries. Using the site, students could choose one country to focus on, do research by reading the articles presented regarding the human rights, and then write a formal letter to the government of the chosen country. Such a lesson could bring history, human rights, and English together. The students would have to do enough research to speak intelligently on the issue they chose to write about, and figure out some alternative they can offer the government. By doing this lesson, students’ would have to learn the formalities of letter writing as well as the importance of being able to use formal Standard English when addressing a stranger of high ranking. If the teacher wanted to go even further, he or she could actually send the letters to the governments if the issues discussed are current events. Letter writing is very important to learn if teachers want to encourage students to be active in their community and government by speaking up and trying to activate change.
http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/40/002.html
The above site could be used to study the history of gender equality in Latin America. Students could cruise the pages of Gertrude M. Yeager’s book and learn about the challenges facing women in history, as well as modern day, in Latin American countries. Students could then use the site to write a persuasive essay as to why men and women in Latin America should be considered equal and be given equal treatment and opportunities. This assignment could help students learn how to write persuasive pieces by forcing them to create a thesis and chose supportive arguments found within Yeager’s book. The lesson would improve student’s technical writing abilities while educating them on the issues facing men and women in other countries around the world. A class could begin this unit by working together to come up with a mock persuasive paper by using issues facing men and women within the United States. Then the students could be on their own to research the gender inequality in Latin America and create their own argument.

The following websites are sites than can be used in an elementary classroom.
Latin America
http://www.brooklynexpedition.org/latin/gateway2.html
This website is very kid friendly. It includes music, colorful text and clipart, pictures, and small amounts of text. There are amazing pictures of ancient artifacts, costumes, and customs. It provides a great overview of Latin American culture. As a lesson, I would have students investigate the website and find their four favorite pictures or artifacts. Then, I would give them five sheets of paper. The first would be a cover sheet. The other four would contain four sentences about each picture and their own drawings of the pictures. Then, students would share their finding and books in small groups to expose the students to other parts of the website they did not focus on.
Rainforest Heroes
http://www.rainforestheroes.com/kidscorner/
This website is a great resource to use on units about the rainforests, in Latin America and around the world. The rainforest are very important to life on earth, yet students are rarely informed about them, or trained to protect them. There are many features on the site to use in the classroom. For younger elementary students, there is a video of two animated trees who talk about the rainforests (approximately 13 minutes). There are also several fact sheets. Another part I liked was the suggestions on protecting the rainforests. I think teachers can incorporate these ideas after a rainforest unit to give students the opportunity to help with their conservation. There is also a teacher’s lounge link on the website which gives additional resources for teaching such as curriculum packets, lesson plans, and audiovisuals. These are just a few possible lesson ideas, but there are many more. Check the site out and just explore.
Mexico for Kids
http://www.elbalero.gob.mx/index_kids.html
This site is actually created by the Mexican government. It is available in several languages so students of all cultures can use it. There are several topics included on the page, including government, history, exploration, and biodiversity. There is also a game section and a news section. For a lesson, I would have the students create KWL charts about Mexico. Then, to answer their what I want to learn section, I would allow them the freedom to explore this site and other resources (books, articles, etc.). Another lesson option would be to allow the students to explore and right down a list of five new things they discovered through the website.
Spanish for Kids
http://www.gardenofpraise.com/spanish.htm
When teaching about another culture, I believe it is valuable to teach some of the language spoken in the other area. Also, young children have amazing abilities to learn new vocabularies so why not expand their exposure of words to other languages. This website provides countless teaching resources, from games to pronunciations to songs. There are numerous vocabulary activities from colors to numbers to days of the week to stories and many more. There are also many links to other pages that teach Spanish, which can be invaluable to teachers.
Chunky Monkey's Rain Forest Friends
http://www.chunkymonkey.com/rainforest/rainforest.htm
This website is actually created by a cartoon artist. It may not have been created for educational purposes, but it can definitely be used in K-1 grades in the classroom. There are four stories about animals from the rain forest, written in diary format. I think these stories great to read to younger students to introduce them to unique animals of the rain forests. As an extension activity, there are instructions on how to draw the rainforest animal cartoons. Students could draw a new animal each day following the artist’s instructions. Tying art in would help reinforce the variety of animals that live in the rainforest.

Great thinking on the Cuban website review. You do have to watch that your students don't project a completely negative view of life in Cuba. While to you and I it may seem quite miserable, to some Cubans, as I recentely learned, life in Cuba can be okay. Just FYI- Cuba has a great education system and some of the best health care in the country.
For the Central America site, I love the idea of having the students create a newspaper from one of the countries. How great! Did you come up with that? Kudos to you.
Reply to Daniel:
I, too, like the Brooklyn Expedition site, although I found it a little difficult to navigate. Kids though are used to seeing websites with a lot of imagary and colors, so it will probably be easier for them.
You mention using a KWL chart for the Mexico site. It seems you could use that for most any of the sites you choose.
Some of you comments though are not the same views as your classmates. It is interesting to note that some of your classmates feel that introducing foreign language, custom and colloquials will only confuse children. You on the other hand, seem to think that will only enrich their learning and I agree.
Nice, pointed reviews.
http://lanic.utexas.edu/la/region/map/#argentina
This link goes to website with extensive maps of Latin American countries. There are maps showing different time periods also maps from different sites. I would this in a unit of ratios. I would have each student select a country or region. They would have to use the maps and create a larger to scale map for a presentation. From there the map would have to include 5 geographic areas of importance marked on the map and described in a separate paper. If this was to be a large assessment of their ratio abilities I would have them create several small maps as well to scale showing the progression of land possession change. In this project they would also include the historical background of the border changes.
http://gosouthamerica.about.com/od/culfiestas/
Students will research one festival. It can be any festival they want. Then they will create a proposal including a budget for the class on how to have a whole class celebration of that festival. In the proposal they would need to include the actual numbers of total cost and what they are spending the money on. Also they would need to explain why each item is needed, what the festival is about, and how the festival relates to our class. The proposal that is decided to be the most convincing will be allowed to organize a Latin American culturally orientated “Day of Fun” for the class. This way they are using basic math skill of quantities and manipulating them to fit with a budget.
http://www.mosaico21.com/archives/one/onlinemosaicoxxi/english/design/julioenglish.htm
Using the pictures and information found in this site, students would pick 3 pictures and identify the different shapes present in the pictures. They will explain what makes the architecture unique for this culture. In comparison they will take pictures of New Orleans architecture and name those shapes. They can talk about reasoning behind the different style of architecture, the aesthetic appearance of the difference styles, and the different shapes they found in the buildings.
http://www.latinamericanfootball.com/
Students will first research the history of Latin American soccer. From there each student will pick one team and track them through their season collecting data. In the end they will use that data for a statistical analysis of players and games. During the year they will discuss probability that their team will win based on previous outcomes.
http://dmoz.org/Home/Cooking/World_Cuisines/Latin_American/
Students would research about the food used in a particular Latin American country. They would present differences between those foods and that normally consumed in America. Then they would take one recipe and prepare it for the class, showing with written formulas how they converted the amounts to work for the whole class.
This post was written by Karlye Brennion:
I'm hoping to teach in a Kindergarten classroom, so my lessons are centered around introducing and giving the students an introduction to Latin America.
Cooking
lanic.utexas.edu/la/region/food/
www.honduras.net/foods/torta.html
These websites give a list of countries and sites in which you can get recipes. A fun lesson would be to talk about foods found in Latin America, such as the plantain, and then cook them together like the reciepe for plantain pancakes found on the second website. Children love to cook and for younger children this is a way to give them a connection to their own lives.
A Look at the Land
www.geographia.com/index05.htm
This website introduces the geography of Latin America. It gives various links to the countries and describes what can be found there as well as dividing them up into regions. This would be a neat way to hit upon some of the social studies standards and incorporate Latin America as well. There are also some pretty nice pictures to be found on this website as well.
Music/Movement
http://home.swipenet.se/gersnaes/henricks/lamusic.html
www.music indiana.edu/som/lamc/links/index.html
These websites give information about types of music, composers, and instruments. Music is important to a child's education and exposing them to various types goes along with that. Latin America has a rich history of music that also incorporates dance. This is a fun way to continue their learning about Latin America while expanding their knowledge base.
Art
www.zeroland.co.nz/latin_america.html
www.latinart.com/index2.cfm
The first website divides everything up into categories such as countries or periods. The second website features artist as well as previewing exhibitions. A teacher can use these resources to share with her students about the various artist and types of art found in Latin America. Children enjoy experiencing art and mimicing the style presented.
Traditions/Festivals
latino.sscnet.ucla.edu/research/folklore.html
gosouthamerica.about.com/od/culfiestas/
When presenting a country or culture, it is good to share their traditions/festivals. These websites are a good resource because they share so much information about the traditions and festivals. Depending on the time of year, you could even have a mini-festival in the classroom.
In my researching about Latin America, I found this website: http:/schools.portnet.k12.ny.us/~rmclean/Latin_America/curriculummap.htm I thought this was an excellent website because it gave some essential questions and resources. I would highly recommend looking at it if you were planning a Latin American unit or incorporation.
reply to Miriam's post:
As usual, great ways of incorporating math and the study of different cultures. I like the way you identify different areas of interest that would appeal to different students, like festivals, sports, and cooking. Also, the comparative aspect with New Orleans is a great connection to make, especially given New Orleans' cultural history.
reply to Karlye's post:
Good ideas for using websites in a kindergarten classroom. You come up with a variety of lenses through which to introduce Latin American culture and for your students to put it to use in the classroom. The music/movement section is especially interesting.
The following websites are sites I found that I could use in my elementary classroom.
1. http://www.journeylatinamerica.co.uk/map/index.shtml
This website has an interactive map of Latin America. When you click on a country, the map zooms in on that country and gives statistics of the country and descriptions of the culture there. There are also links provided to websites that will give further information on that specific country. I thought this website could be used for projects in a classroom of older elementary students. It can help them with their geography skills, or an assignment could be created in which the students must choose a Latin American country and use this website to help them gather information on it. Although the website tends to be a bit slow, it is easy to navigate and gives a good overview and pictures.
2. http://www.elbalero.gob.mx/index_kids.html
This site, called "Mexico for Kids", would be a good site for elementary school children. It is colorful and interactive and provides history on the country, games, current information, and current news. Although the games would be fun, they are not informational about Mexico. This site could be used during free time, however, to let the students explore. For the children to be able to play the games, I would require them to first explore the website and find 3 new pieces of information about Mexico that they did not know and we had not learned in class yet. They could then share this with the class.
3. http://www.fsu.edu/~modlang/sp-cai/coursesite/ArtLinks.htm
This website is another that can be used with older students. It is a website that provides links to different hispanic art. As an assignment, I would have students explore the site and either pick a country, time period, or artist to focus on. Each student would then gather information on their topic, explore the art work of that artist, country, or time period, write a short essay reporting what they found, and finally create their own art project inspired by the artwork they found. For example, they could do their own painting modeled after the art work of 17th century spain to go with their essay.
4. http://www.learnalanguage.org/elemspan/
This website is an interactive site that teaches spanish. I would use this site while teaching spanish to my students to give them more practice. The website provides pronunciation of letters and words as well as different games that review vocabulary and practice quizzes. I would use this website as a center in my classroom for the students use during center time. They would get extra practice on new information or extra help for students who are having trouble.
5. http://www.ccph.com/ares/site/
This website would be good for any age. It is a website of the Amazon River Elementary School. It provides pictures of the students, the school, and some of the activities they have done. There are also comments by some of the students in each grade. I would have my students explore this website to get an idea of how other children their age live in other areas of the world. I would have each student find two things that are similar and two things that are different between the Amazon school and our school. It would also be fun if the students in my school could contact the students at the Amazon school and become pen pals.
http://www.maria-brazil.org/fdind.htm
This website lists a lot of fun Brazilian recipes that you could do in class with your students, like bananas covered in cinnamon, or bean salad. Having a Latin American lunch would be a good extension for a lesson on different types of South American cooking. Some of the recipes are pretty complicated though, so I would use only the ones that involve little to no heat cooking in my classroom.
http://home.swipnet.se/gersnaes/henriks/lamusic.html
This website has samples of different music from Latin America, separated by region. Music is also an important extension for a lesson in an early childhood setting. I would use this for a series of lessons, allowing children to compare the different types of music, and then try to replicate them using instruments either in the classroom or homemade.
http://nancykeane.com/rl/682.htm
This website has a huge list of Mexican folk tales. These could be used for a literacy unit, where the students could assign character attributes, find common themes in the stories, create their own folk tales in similar styles, and compare these folk stories to the more familiar American ones.
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/rainforest/animals/Rfbiomeanimals.shtml
This is a student-friendly website on all aspects of a rainforest. There are coloring pages of rainforest animals that can be printed out, as well as a list of the different regions of the world that have rainforests, and what types of animals live in each. Animals are always interesting in elementary classrooms, and this website would fit in perfectly with an earth science unit on ecosystems.
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/geography/samer/
This is a page with printout maps of the continent of South America, as well as the individual countries. There are also flags that can be printed out and colored. This would fit in with a geography lesson on Latin American countries. Kids could color the maps and flags, discuss topography and do an extension by each picking a country at random from the map and finding 5 interesting facts about it to present to the class.

What are your 50,000 thoughts a day creating?
Our thoughts create our reality. This is a simple truth known by all people involved on the spiritual path. It is one of the most taught universal principles in the personal development field. Yet it is one of the most misunderstood!
People practice visualisation, affirmations, they use hypnosis, subliminal programming or countless other tools to transform their lives. However they fail to recognise one key area in their lives that hinder these wonderful techniques from being effective.
They sit day after day visualising their perfect scene and yet nothing happens. Why? They have followed all the instructions to the letter! They have chanted and imagined! They have formed a colourful, vibrant scene in their minds and affirmed that this is their reality. Then all of a sudden things get worse! What is going on?
Would you like to know the secret? Would you like to know why these people get no results? Would you like to hear one powerful statement that explains everything?
Yes?
Good. I will tell you why these people get no results or even opposite results to those they are aiming for -simply because of the following truth. Consciously controlled thoughts such as visualisations do not materialise - ALL thoughts materialise!!!
Most people believe that if they visualise for 10 minutes a day their lives will magically transform. This is not the case. You must change your core thinking. You think approx. 50,000 thoughts a day. How many of those thoughts are working against your ten minute visualisation?
You can control the thoughts that enter your mind by changing the way you view the world. You can decide which thoughts you give energy to and which thoughts you discard.
The thoughts that you follow and give energy to become more dominant than the thoughts you discard. Your subconscious mind records these as your dominant picture on the issue at hand. You then move towards this picture because your subconscious mind starts making your outside world reflect the picture that you have stored internally.
Your mind should be on whatever you want. The picture you need to have is a positive vision of you already having achieved your goal. To realise this vision you need to focus and concentrate. Remember thoughts are real, they create your reality.
Let's say you have been visualising a new house. You spend your ten minutes in meditation picturing yourself living in your dream home. You finish your session and get up feeling positive that you will achieve your goal. Then during the day you get a heating bill through the post and exclaim "Oh no look how expensive this is I cannot afford to heat this house". Where is your focus in the present moment? What are you affirming? You are telling your subconscious mind that you cannot deal with what you have. You are affirming that your life is not how you want it to be. If you knew without doubt that within a week you would be moving to your new home would you honestly be worried about a heating bill? Perhaps other doubts creep in like "I should be happy with what I have", or "I will never get this house looking the way I want it" and so on and so on.
These thoughts that are not aligned with your goal. You are not giving complete attention to what you want. Whilst you are dealing with these other lines of thought your attention is not on your goal.
If you are aware of your thoughts you will suddenly realise that you have spent much more energy on counter productive thoughts than on creating a dominant picture of the goal you want.
Point your focus in the direction of you're the life you want. Think about what you want NOT what you don't want. It's that simple.
Your focus determines your reality. Change your focus and you change your life. hypnosis

A typical dictionary definition of hypnosis states that it is: a state that resembles sleep but that is induced by suggestion. However, anyone who has tried hypnosis (and any self respecting hypnotist) will tell you that this is a very simplistic view of the subject!
A much better description comes from the Free Online Dictionary which states that hypnosis is: an artificially induced state of consciousness, characterised by heightened suggestibility and receptivity to direction. So what does this mean and how can it be used to your advantage?
Well, the subject of hypnosis has been discussed and pondered since the late 1700s. Many explanations and theories have come and gone though science, however, has yet to supply a valid and well-established definition of how it actually happens. It's fairly unlikely that the scientific community will arrive at a definitive explanation for hypnosis in the near future either, as the untapped resources of our 'mostly' uncharted mind still remain something of a mystery.
However, the general characteristics of hypnosis are well documented. It is a trance state characterized by extreme suggestibility, deep relaxation and heightened imaginative functioning. It's not really like sleep at all, because the subject is alert the whole time. It is most often compared to daydreaming, or the feeling you get when you watch a movie or read a captivating book. You are fully conscious, but you tune out most of the outside world. Your focus is concentrated intensely on the mental processes you are experiencing - if movies didn't provide such disassociation with everyday life and put a person in a very receptive state then they would not be as popular (nor would TV advertising be as effective!). Have you ever stated that a film wasn't great because you just couldn't 'get into it'???
This works very simply; while daydream or watching a movie, an imaginary world becomes almost real to you because it fully engages your emotional responses. Such mental pursuits will on most occasions cause real emotional responses such as fear, sadness or happiness (have you ever cried at a sad movie, felt excited by a future event not yet taken place or shivered at the thought of your worst fear?).
It is widely accepted that these states are all forms of self-hypnosis. If you take this view you can easily see that you go into and out of mild hypnotic states on a daily basis - when driving home from work, washing the dishes, or even listening to a boring conversation. Although these situations produce a mental state that is very receptive to suggestion the most powerful time for self-change occurs in the trance state brought on by intentional relaxation and focusing exercises. This deep hypnosis is often compared to the relaxed mental state between wakefulness and sleep.
In this mental state, people feel uninhibited and relaxed and they release all worries and doubts that normally occupy their mind. A similar experience occurs while you are daydreaming or watching the TV. You become so involved in the onscreen antics that worries and everyday cares fade away, until all you're focused on is the TV. In this state, you are also highly suggestible. That is why when a hypnotist tells you do something under trance; you'll probably embrace the idea completely.
However, your sense of safety and morality remain entrenched throughout the experience and should either of these be threatened you immediately wake!
A hypnotist can not get you to do anything you don't want to do. So while in such a state, when we are highly suggestible and open to new beliefs, a skillful hypnotist, whether in person or via a recording, can alter life-long behaviours and even give us new ones! erotic hypnosis
Can you use hypnosis and self hypnosis to improve your health?
Well in 1958 the American Psychological Association, the American Medical Association and The British Medical Association concluded that hypnosis was indeed a viable therapeutic tool and approved its medical use.
Although there are many theories, no-one really knows how or why hypnosis works. However, the benefits of its use are clear. It has been used successfully in all manner of treatments from IBS to pre-surgery relaxation and post-surgery pain relief.
Olympic athletes, footballers, basketball layers, golfers etc., have known about the power of the mind for some decades now (perhaps the elite knew even further back). It has been shown in medical studies that when you visualise yourself performing a task your muscles respond in exactly the same way as they would if you were actually doing the task. Sports psychologist have used this to their, and their clients, advantage for years now.
The power of the mind is becoming more evident to the medical establishment as well. Everyone knows about the beneficial effects of using a placebo. It seems that if the mind is convinced that something is true then it will make it true even if the situation appears to be the exact of opposite in the 'real world'!
It seems that the quickest way to get the mind to accept a new belief is through hypnosis and self hypnosis. Phobias can be eliminated in one session now and new beliefs planted in the same aount of time.
The use of hypnosis as a weight-loss tool is well written about as its effectiveness in quitting smoking! It has been used very effectively in non-surgical breast enhancement and treating erectile dysfunction. So it is not very hard to believe that it could be used to convince the mind that health is abundant or that a particular unhealthy situation is reversing itself.
Once the mind becomes convinced that an unhealthy situation no longer exists and that health is abundant then just like the visualiser who makes his/her muscles respond to a mental image the person in discomfort or dis-ease can make his/her body begin to repair itself. Makes sense right!
No-one can predict the scope of hypnosis for healing. However, everyone knows of miracle healings that have taken place when a sick person has visited a spiritual healer, bathed at Lourdes, prayed etc. If these healings can take place then I see no reason not to believe that hypnosis can have the same effect.
Unfortunately, no large scale studies have been undertaken, to my knowledge, that have tested the power of hypnosis to cure chronic or terminal illness but I do believe there is enough evidence to suggest it is a very beneficial tool in recovery. self hypnosis

We all know the effects (and after-effects) of beer. But lifting a glass of cool liquid to your mouth on a scorching hot day, have you ever stopped to consider the processes and ingredients involved in making it? Well maybe not but here is the answer anyway!
Simply, beer is a fermented combination of water, barley, yeast and hops. The major variation in any beer is the type of yeast used in the fermentation process.
Let's look at the properties of this beverage.
Water is the main ingredient of beer. In the past, the purity of the water influenced the final result and was specific to the region of the earth from which it came. Today, water is filtered of these impurities, although pure water supplies are still ideally preferred by elite brewers.
Barley malt is an extremely important ingredient in beer as it is the main source of fermentable sugar. Many new breweries use barley malt extract, in either syrup or powder form, as this form ferments much quicker. It also contains many minerals and vitamins that help the yeast to grow.
Without yeast, beer would not exist. Yeast is a unique single cell organism that eats sugar and expels alcohol and carbon dioxide, two of the more recognizable ingredients of beer. Yeast comes in several variations, of which there are two major categories that determine the type of beer produced; Ale yeast and Lager yeast. If yeast alone were used the beer would be extremely sweet and therefore another ingredient needs to be added to reach the final product.
Hops are the flowers of the hop plant, a climbing vine plant that grows well in many differing climates. Hops contain acids which add bitterness to beer. Adding bitterness to beer helps to balance the sweetness, as well as acting as a natural preservative. Add more hops to the mixture and you will get a more bitter taste. This kind of beer is extremely popular in Britian and is simply referred to as "Bitter" (the original names are always the best!).
Variations of these ingredients create different tasting beers as well as having an affect on the alcoholic content.
When making your own beer many good resources are available which provide home brewing kits. It is important to read the ingredients of the packets in order to ascertain which has the best mixture according to your needs. One quick tip which many home brewers fail to adhere to is this: "Use fresh still water"!
Many have often sought information on how to make beer and the basic homebrewing equipment is not very expensive you can get what you need, for as little as $100.
In order to start making beer, you will need the following: A brewpot, Primary fermenter, Airlock and stopper, Bottling bucket, Bottles, Bottle brush, Bottle capper, and a thermometer.
In addition you can even use items from your kitchen to aid in the beer making. A breakdown of all the equipment is as follows: Brewpot A brewpot is made of stainless steel or enamel-coated metal which has at least 15 litre capacity, but it's no good if it's made of aluminum or if it's a chipped enamelized pot, (these will make the beer taste funny). The brew pot is used to boil the ingredients thus begins the first stage of beer making.
Primary fermenter
The primary fermenter is where the beer begins to ferment and become that fabulous stuff that makes you so funny and charming. The primary fermenter must have a minimum capacity of 26 litres and an air tight seal it must also accommodate the airlock and rubber stopper. Make sure the one you buy is made of food-grade plastic, as it wont allow the bad stuff in or let the good stuff out.
Airlock and stopper
The airlock is a handy gadget which allows carbon dioxide to escape from your primary fermenter during fermentation, it is this process that keeps it from exploding, but it doesn't allow any of the bad air from outside to enter. It fits into a rubber stopper, and is placed into the top of your primary fermenter. The stoppers are numbered according to size, so make sure you use the correct stopper for the correct hole
Plastic hose
This is a food grade plastic hose which measures approximately 5 feet in length. It is needed to transfer the beer from system to system, and it is imperitive that it is kept clean and free from damage or clogs
Bottling bucket
This is a large, food-grade plastic bucket with a tap for drawing water at the bottom, it needs to be as big as your primary fermenter, because you need the capacity to pour all the liquid from your primary fermenter into a bottling bucket prior to bottling up.
Bottles
After fermentation, you place the beer in bottles for secondary fermentation and storage. You need enough bottles to hold all the beer you're going to make, the best kind of bottles are solid glass ones with smooth tops (not the twist-off kind) that will accept a cap from a bottle capper. You can use plastic ones with screw-on lids, but they arent as good for fermentation and dont look as well.
Whether you use glass or plastic bottles, make sure they are dark-colored. Light damages beer, i would recommend green or brown bottles.
Bottle brush
This is a thin, curvy brush which is used to clean bottles because of the the shape of the brush it makes it very affective at getting the bottle spotless. We haven't even gotten into how clean everything has to be, but we will, and the bottle brush is a specialized bit of cleaning equipment that you will require in order to maintain your bottle kit.
Bottle capper
If you take buy glass bottles, you will need some sort of bottle capper and caps, of course, and you can buy them from any brewing supplies store. The best sort of bottle capper is one which can be affixed to a surface and worked with one hand while you hold the bottle with the other.
Thermometer
This is a thermometer which can be stuck to the side of your fermenter, they are just thin strips of plastic which are self adhesive, and can be found in any brewing supplies store, or from a pet shop or aquarium. Not everything costs money though even some household equipment can be used.
Household items
In addition to the above specialized equipment, you will need the following household items:
* Small bowl
* Saucepan
* Rubber spatula
* Oven mitts/pot handlers
* Big mixing spoon (stainless steel or plastic)
So there you have the ingredients and the method to make your home brew, all you need now is to get yourself a beer making kit and your on the way to beer heaven.
